AAA’S TOP 10 TIPS FOR WINTER DRIVING

1. Before starting out, remove snow from the entire car so it doesn’t blow onto your windshield or the windshields of other drivers.
自分の車や他人の車のフロントガラスに雪が吹きかからないように、エンジンをかける前は車体に積もった雪を払いましょう。
2. Don’t use cruise control in precipitation and freezing temperatures.
降雨や降雪時、また気温の低い時はクルーズコントロールを使わない。
3. Remember that four-wheel drive helps you to get going quicker, but it won’t help you stop any faster.
４輪駆動での運転は、動きがいいのですが早く車を停止させることはできません。
4. Familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s braking system. Drivers with anti-lock brakes should apply firm, constant pressure while those without may need to pump the pedal in order to avoid loss of traction while stopping.
自分の車のブレーキシステムについて理解しておきましょう。 anti-lock ブレーキ機能がある車の場合、ブレーキを強く踏むと小刻みにブレーキがかかるので、停止するまでの間、車の滑りを抑えます。
5. Always drive at a speed that matches the prevailing visibility, traffic and road conditions.
常に道路状況に合わせたスピートで運転しましょう。
6. Compensate for reduced traction by increasing your following distances (normally three to four seconds) to eight to 10 seconds.
タイヤがスリップする可能性もあるため、前の車との距離を８秒〜１０秒ぐらい空けましょう。（通常は３秒〜４秒）
7. Allow sufficient room for maintenance vehicles and plows, stay at least 15 car lengths (200 feet) back and, if you need to pass, go to the other vehicle’s left.
作業車や除雪車などの車のために十分なスペースを空けましょう。少なくても１５台分の車間（２００フィート）を空け、追い越しをする場合は左側から追い越しましょう。
8. Watch for icy surfaces on bridges and intersections. (Personal Hint: Try to brake before you pass over a bridge or through an intersection.)
橋や交差点の路上が凍ってないか気をつけましょう。（パーソナルヒント：進入する前に一度ブレーキをかけて確かめましょう）
9. If you get stuck in snow, straighten the wheel and accelerate slowly. Add sand or cat litter under the drive wheels to help avoid spinning the tires.
もし、雪にはまったら、ハンドルを真っ直ぐにして、ゆっくりアクセルを踏みましょう。タイヤの下に砂や猫のトイレ用砂を撒くとタイヤがスピンするのを防げます。
10.If your tires lose traction, continue to look and steer in the direction you want to go. If the drive wheels start to spin or slide while going up a hills, ease off the accelerator slightly and then gently resume speed. (Personal Hint: You may slip less if you drive in 2nd gear up or down an icy or snowy hill.)
もしタイヤが滑ってしまったら、行きたい方向を見続けてハンドルを操作しましょう。丘を登る途中でタイヤがスピンしたり滑ったりしてしまった場合、少し減速し、ゆっくりとスピードを出していきましょう。（パーソナルヒント：雪の積もった丘や凍結している道を下る時などギアをセカンドにするとスリップするのを防げます）
