10月22日、総領事公邸にて平成28年度外務大臣表彰の式典が催され、全米剣道連盟会長ならびに国際剣道連盟副会長の田川順照氏が岸田文雄外務大臣による表彰状を和田充広デトロイト総領事の手により授与された。
外務大臣表彰は、国際関係の様々な分野で活躍し、日本と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に多大な貢献をしている中で特に顕著な功績のあった個人および団体について、その功績を称えることを目的としており、田川氏は米国における剣道の普及を通じて日米間の友好と文化交流に貢献した功績が認められ、今年度142名(うち日本国外在住者117名)の個人受賞者の1人に名を連ねた。
田川氏は幼少の頃より剣道を始め、競技者ならびに剣道家として名を馳せ、大学卒業後の1975年に全日本剣道道場連盟より派遣されて渡米、剣道の指導と普及を任された。1996年にはデトロイト剣道道場を設立。氏の長年にわたる絶え間ない献身と努力によって、道場の門人は増え、1999年以来毎年開催されているデトロイト道場主催の剣道大会は全米やカナダから毎年300-350人の参加者を迎えるほど、中西部と東海岸地区において最も大規模な大会となっている。例年、田川氏が懇意にしている高名な剣道家が日本から招致され講習会を開くこともあり、参加者の剣道水準の向上に寄与している。
2012年には全米剣道連盟の要請により、第15回世界選手権の強化委員長としてアメリカチームを指導、引率し、男子・女子ともに団体戦の部門で三位に導いた。
この功績が称えられ、全米剣道連盟から特別功労賞を受賞している。2005年、田川氏は東京で開催された審査において、剣道界で最高段位である八段に合格。数多い剣道人口の中で特に優れた剣道家らが八段位を目指して稽古に精進しているものの、合格率が１パーセントを下回るほど、八段試験は合格するのが非常に難しいことで知られている。さらに今年5月、その八段の中でも特に秀でた剣道家に与えられる剣道範士の称号を受称。全日本剣道連盟が授与する称号の最高位であり、剣道称号範士の本年の合格者はわずか6名であり、日本国外では初の受称となった。
デトロイトに移住して以来、デトロイト美術館やジャパンフィスティバル、その他行事において剣道のデモンストレーションを数多く行なうなど、ミッドウェスト・ツアー・サービス社の社長を務める傍ら、当地域における文化の多様化と深化に多大な貢献をしている。
この日の表彰式典には州外からの剣道関係者や氏の友人も祝賀に駆けつけ、華やかな宴となった。
開会にあたり和田総領事は授賞理由と田川氏の剣道歴を告げた後、デトロイト道場主催による剣道大会の規模や氏の人脈によって著名な剣道家を招いている内容の素晴らしさについて称賛。国外で唯一人の範士であり、長年にわたる多大な貢献は表彰に値すると称えた。
和田総領事は現地報道関係者に向けて、「功績を称えることができることを光栄に思います。氏は『剣の道』を身をもって示してくださっていると思います」と談話を寄せている。
続いて、デトロイト道場関係者の作成による田川氏紹介スライドが上映され、高段かつ範士である“田川先生”が厳しいながらも、冗談や楽しい場を好み、カラオケや親睦イベントでは誰もが楽しんでいるかどうかをいつも確かめるなど、慈愛に満ちた指導者であることを披露し、田川氏に注ぐ尊敬と親愛の思いが伝えられた。
田川氏は挨拶の冒頭で「この授賞は私個人だけでなく、剣道発展に歩んできた剣友みんなと共に頂いた賞だと思います」と告げた後、「1975年、“剣を通じて日本の心を”と一つの小さな火種をもって渡米しました。」と切り出し、当時のアメリカ剣道界は6の地域連盟、千人余りの剣道人口であったものが、現在は15の地域連盟、6千人を超える剣道人口へと発展、また、20年前のミシガンに於いては10数名の剣道愛好家しかいなかったが、今や州内に6の道場ができ、デトロイト剣道道場だけでも60人を超える剣士が週
2回の稽古に励んでいると、この40年の普及の成果を伝えた。
さらに「日本の武道では “礼に始まり、礼に終わる”と言いますが、剣道では“礼に始まり、礼をもって行い、礼に終わる”と言い、勝負の場でも“礼節を尊ぶ”ことを重視しています。竹刀という剣は相手に向ける剣であると同時に自分に向けられた剣でもあります。これからも剣道トーナメントを開催する他、各種日本文化イベントでの剣道の披露などを通じて、日米の文化交流、相互理解を深めて頂けるよう、日本伝統文化剣道を育てていきたい」
「5月6日に剣道界最高位の範士号を授賞した際に“精進無涯”の書をしたためました。師は教えるのみでなく、共に学ぶのが剣道です。剣の道をより極めて、剣道文化の発展に微力ながら生涯努めてまいります。」と剣道普及と精進の意思を表明した。
デトロイト道場師範代理を務める馬目氏の音頭により祝杯が上げられた後、記念写真の時間が設けられ、大勢の参加者が田川氏との写真撮影に誇らしげな喜びの表情を見せていた。
President of All United States Kendo Federation 
Receives Commendation
from Foreign Minister of Japan
Yoshiteru Tagawa, President of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF) and Vice-President of the International Kendo Federation (FIK), has been awarded a Foreign Minister’s Commendation by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Fumio Kishida.
Mr. Tagawa is being recognized for promoting friendship and cultural exchange between Japan and the United States through the proliferation of the art of kendo throughout the U.S.
Mr. Tagawa began his training at an early age and eventually became a renowned competitor and practitioner by the time he graduated from college. In 1975, as a representative of the Kendo Dojo Federation of Japan, he was dispatched to the U.S. to teach and promote kendo. Twenty one years later, in 1996, Mr. Tagawa established the Detroit Kendo Dojo. Due to his continuous efforts and dedications, the dojo has expanded its student base and has hosted an annual kendo tournament since 1999, the biggest tournament in the entire Midwest and East Coast regions. The event routinely attracts 300-350 participants from all over the United States and Canada. The tournament serves as a great learning opportunity for its participants as Mr. Tagawa uses his extensive network to invite notable kendo masters from around the world in hopes of elevating the level of ability on display.
At the request of the AUSKF, Mr. Tagawa led the U.S. national team at the 15th World Championship in 2012. Under his instruction and leadership, Team USA was placed 3rd in the tournament for both men’s and women’s divisions. Mr. Tagawa received a special honor for this accomplishment from the AUSKF.
In 2005, Mr. Tagawa tested successfully to earn the rank of 8-dan in Tokyo. This is typically the farthest milestone for elite kendo practitioners as achieving the rank is notoriously difficult–less than one percent of 7-dan contestants are promoted in its biannual examinations. This year, Mr. Tagawa was presented with the rank of Hanshi 8-dan, the highest rank in kendo that is preserved for the most exceptional 8-dan teachers.
Since moving to the Detroit area, Mr. Tagawa has made significant contributions to enriching culture and diversity in the local community. He has participated in numerous events including a Kendo demonstration at the Detroit Institute of Arts during the showing of their Samurai exhibit in 2014.
Professionally, Mr. Tagawa runs his own travel agency, the Midwest Tour Service, LLC.
“We are honored to recognize Mr. Tagawa for his continuous dedication to Kendo and his stellar contribution to the U.S.-Japan friendship and cultural exchange through the promotion of this martial art,” stated Consul-General Mitsuhiro Wada. “He has truly shown us the spirit of ‘the way of the sword.’”
