文化・芸術・教育・公共・慈善など４０の団体に寄付
ＪＢＳＤ基金2011年度 Grant Award 贈呈式が12月9日、ノバイ市のシェラトンホテルで行われた。ＪＢＳＤ基金は、Japan Business Society of Detroit（デトロイト日本商工会）によって、米国社会への地域貢献と感謝の気持ちを表すために1992年に設立され、今回は20周年にあたる。日本人子女が通う現地校や日米交流に貢献している団体に限らず、教育・文化など地域社会促進に貢献している組織、研究機関などを対象に資金面の支援を継続してきている。
2011年度は右記のデトロイト近郊の４０団体に総額約７万９百ドルが贈られた。加藤栄治ＪＢＳＤ基金理事長の挨拶後、各受賞団体の代表者に寄付金が手渡され、それぞれの代表者は感謝の言葉と、各団体の概要や活動内容、基金の使途を伝えた。
この基金の恩恵を受けて日本訪問を予定している高校生が代表者とともに挨拶に立った。｢ペンパルとの交流やホームステイが楽しみです。将来的にはJETプログラムに応募することも考えています。このグラントがあることで、とても高額な旅が可能になり、とても感謝しています。｣(原文は英語)と、期待や意欲の言葉を直に伝えた。
又、ウェイン・ステイト大学では初めてジャパンクラブが立ち上げられ、贈呈されるグラントは今後の活動に大きく貢献するとのこと。会場にはミシガン大学やイースタン・ミシガン大学のジャパンクラブの会長も揃い、活発な意見交換とアドバイスのやりとりがなされる姿も見られた。
世界的な不景気の煽りから随所で、特に教育現場での厳しい予算削減が余儀なくされている昨今、デトロイト近郊社会への、特に将来を担う若者たちへのたゆまぬ資金援助は、大変重要な意義を持つ。基金そのものの社会的貢献もさることながら、援助する側とされる側が一堂に会し互いの存在と努力を確認し合う、相互理解と日米親善を再認識させられる尊い場であった。

Novi, MI, December 9, 2011 – The Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD) Foundation has donated $70,900 in financial assistance to 40 cultural, artistic, educational, civic, and charitable organizations, it was announced by Mr. Eiji Kato, President of the JBSD Foundation.
The JBSD Foundation hosted the 20th Annual Grants Award ceremony to celebrate these contributions on Friday, December 9, 2011, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m at the Sheraton Detroit Novi Hotel, Novi, MI. The Honorable Kuninori Matsuda, Consul General of Japan at Detroit, and other dignitaries participated in the event.
“This is the 20th Anniversary of JBSD Foundation and we are proud of our continued support of community organizations that promote community enhancement, education, and research as well as unity between the Japanese and American cultures for 20 consecutive years. Many of our recipients represent youth and non-profit scholastic programs,” said Mr. Kato.
To date, $1.5 Million has been distributed to organizations throughout Southeast Michigan, with a special emphasis on the Greater Detroit Metropolitan area.
The JBSD Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Japan Business Society of Detroit (JBSD), which oversees the largest group of global investors in Michigan, with over 250 companies and 1,550 members. The JBSD enhances understanding and mutual cooperation between Japanese and Americans through community and business involvement.
